Found this on Wikipedia, but several other sources say basically the 
same thing:

A tire iron is a specialized

The form commonly found in car trunks is an L-shaped metal rod with a 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//wiki/Lug_wrench>lug wrench on the bent 
end and a prying tip on the other. In some cases, it is a cross, with 
different sized sockets on each end.

I guess the thing is that language evolves, and the meaning of terms 
changes.  Now excuse me while I go get a beer out of the ice box.
