I've used the oxy/mapp setup for years.  It works great for heating and very
very limited welding, well, more like brazing.  For what you described, it
would be fine.  As was mentioned, buy at least twice as many oxy bottles as
mapp.  I have graduated to large oxy/acet tanks, but sometimes find for
small jobs it's easier to grab the oxy/mapp than drag the tanks out.
