this is the best way to attach your wood to the 1x3 rafters...  They're 
called "TEK" screws and come in a variety of sizes and lengths... from #10 
up thru 5/16" or so... and 1/2" thru 3 or 4" length...   most have a 5/16 or 
3/8 hex head and work nicely with a cordless drill (with a good battery) and 
a nut driver attachment...

I use them all the time... handier than a shirt pocket.... home depot, lowes 
and any good hardware store carries them... little more expensive than 
regular sheet metal screws... but well worth it... no holes to drill !!!!!
