This won't be much help, but it may plant a seed. I don't like  
Gambrels at all, but I imagine if I had to design one, I'd start with  
putting a 90 degree gable on top of a Mansard.

I am, however, in full support of the 1/4 circle Amityville Horror  
windows in the gable end ;-)
