Amazon has homeowner-grade 300' fiberglass tapes http://tinyurl.com/cv5kb7
for under $50.  A 300' steel tape, suitable for use by surveyors, will run
three times that.  As noted, we can spend a lot less but I wouldn't expect 1
in 500 precision for $12.98.
