retrofitting the electric tach

It doesn't appear that anyone has responded to Mark Cambell's query
regarding the retrofit of an electronic tach to his car.  I am similarly
interested in this subject.  Were the later year Spits equipped with
electronic tachs?  If so, do they measure rpm from the coil or the
distributor?  This details here would really help me.
