Distributer housing

Is it possible for the dist housing to be installed 180 degrees off and the
distributer itself to be aligned correctly?
The reason I'm asking is I need to retard timing on my 1500 engine and the
vacuum advance is right up against the head (pointing directly toward the
firewall) and I don't have any more room to spin the distributer.
