The reason you get disparing stories on who makes it is because Rover Group
which owns almost all of the old british margues was bought a few years back
(somewhere around '94) by BMW.    So technically both ways are right.

Just think I own a '79 BMW Spitfire 1500 and a 1999 Mercedes Grand Caravan.
