Gear Oil

Where does everyone get gear oil in GL-4?  I have called around to all of 
the auto parts stores in town and no one carries anything other then the 
GL-5.  Are the synthetic versions of GL-5 harmful as well as the regular 
oil?  I am hoping to change out the gear oil in the tranny and diff before 
my brake parts come in so I can finally drive my Spit for the first 
time.  Thanks!
