I have a street legal 52" amber rotating halogen lightbar with four
rotators, two alternating flashers front and rear, front take down lights,
and side alley lights. I do roadside assistance when I can for broken down
cars or highway accidents by providing traffic control (traffic cones,
STOP/SLOW paddle, etc). If someone comes up close behind my van I can hit
the light bar for a few seconds and they back off quickly. Completely
legal and effective.

That doesn't help it when I'm driving Giles though- Spitfires with
lightbars would look downright silly. :) I like Jeff's suggestion the best
so far.
