By "top plate" do you mean the round disc with the three studs?
And was the shock absorber shaft worn where it passes through
the hole of that disc?

It sounds like the rubber bushings had disintegrated a long time ago,
and the shaft was rubbing against the side of the hole for a long time.
If the bushings are properly installed, there should be no metal-metal contact.

If the spring is bent are damaged, possibly it could be supporting the
load unevenly, and putting a sideways force on the shock shaft, causing it
to rub against the top plate.
