How recent is 'recently'?  If I'd bought a new/recon alternator anywhere in
the UK and it died like yours has within a year, I'd be sending it back for
a replacement - I assume that would be the same in the US?  A properly
reconned alternator should be fine unless you have extra electrical
equipment that drains current faster than a standard spit, I wouldn't have
thought fitting an alternative should be necessary (although the conveniance
of obtaining the GM alternator may be a separate advantage).
