Got the engine in my '60 Sprite identified! It's apparently a 948cc
engine/carb/etc from a Mk I Midget (judging by the "950" cast in the
block, the 1 1/4" carb-to-manifold diameter, and the "MG" rocker cover).

Further questions:

Since I'm missing the engine tag, I dont' know if I have the high
compression engine, or the "center change" vs. "close ratio" gearbox.
Does this matter to me?

I've started disassembling the carbs. There is a rust-red clay-like
substance gumming up the float chamber. What is this stuff? It's caked
about 1/2" deep in the bottom of the float chamber, and some more caked
around the jet.

In cleaning the outside of the float chamber, I'm not sure whether I'm
removing paint or just caked on gunk. Should these be painted? Or left
bare metal?
