I did a full rebuild on the block - including hot-tanking it. Any crud
that was in there was cleaned out. Visual inspection of the block
verified it was good and clean. I had no problem maintaining oil
pressure for the 1500 miles the engine had on it when the cam seized.

Sure - it was a new cam from Piper. The oil grooves were clear.

The running theory is that my dizzy drive gear lost a tooth or two and
crunched into the cam drive gear, locking the cam from that point and
breaking the timing chain. Hopefully this is the case, as this would
mean that the cam didn't seize from lack of oil.
