AH, I knew there was something I forgot.  I can't FIND the switch on the
transmission.  The Haynes manual is significantly less than clear on the
matter.   The only cable I can see running to the gearbox is the speedo
cable.  I found the gearbox plug/bolt, and on the same side of the tunnel
(drivers side & further to the rear of the car) is this terminal-looking
thing with no cable running to it, and no way I see of attaching a cable
to it.  So I haven't been able to test the switch at all.  Still, even if
the switch isn't working, that doesn't explain the scorch marks on the
fuse box, does it?

My car is a '74 1275 Midget.
