Hi Dustin,

I have a '69 1275 fitted with a lcb header and a Monza muffler. There is no
crackling and backfiring between shifts. The off throttle sound is deeper
than on throttle but no snap, crackle, pop.

When I got the car the off throttle sound had a lot of popping to it,
similar to a backfire sound but less pronounced. That turn out to be from a
burnt exhaust valve. Fixed that and the exhaust sounds great.

Switching to the lcb header gave me the best performance improvement for my
money yet. Personally, I'd stay away from going back to the stock setup if
I were you, and move in the direction of an engine that breathes more
optimally. The Monza alone deosn't help much but coupled with the lcb
you'll be pleasantly suprised.

For the popping noise check out your mixture and the condition of the valves.
