Once again it time for another episode of that exciting game show,
"Guess what part is on Bill's Midget." That's right now you have a
chance to win valuable prizes. Here is a small sample of the prizes
you can win; as I look around a I an old stapler sans staples, one old
dog, floppy disk, pens and pencils and much more. Compete against world
wide experts, in a game that makes Jeopardy look easy. Void where
prohibited,
MA, ND, and SD, all rights reserved, all prize will be award via email,
yada,
yada, yada. And now for the first question.

I am having trouble identifying the grommets on my value cover. The car is
a
77 MG Midget (1500 cc Triumph engine). It appears that MG changed the part
to an O-ring in 1977. Here is what is on my car:

    1. Value cover with 2 holes. Each hole is 1/2" in diameter.
    2. Two rubber grommets with an id of 7/16" and od of 1 1/16".
       The grommet is 1/4" thick.
    3. Two metal caps that fit over the grommets (item 2).
    4. Two bolts that have a smooth outside and a female threaded hole.
The
bolt has id of 1/4" and an od of 7/16". It is 1 1/16" long.

The stuff goes together as follows. The grommet (item 2) fits over the
hole.
The metal cap (item 3) is placed over the grommet. The bolt (item 4) is
passed
through the center of the metal cap and grommet, then through the value
cover
and then it screws onto a stud that is on the cylinder head.
This stud is below the level of the value cover. Below is a crude attempt
at
ascii art.

          _____________
         |___ _____| <- Bolt (item 4)
        _____| | ______
       /ggggg| | gggggg\ <- metal cap (item 3)
    -------gg| | gg---------- <- value cover
             | |
             | |
              rrr
              rrr
rrr <- threaded rod attached to cylinder head
              rrr
rrr The little g's are the grommet
rrr The little r's are the threaded rod

The problem is the gromit/o-ring I ordered from Moss is different. The
ones
I got were much smaller. I think they sent the correct part as shown in
their catalog. The value cover in their catalog is held on by a nut
not a bolt. So I order both the grommet and metal cap and these are the
ones I got:

    1. Two grommets, od < 7/16", thickness ~1/16"
    2. Two metal caps that fit of the grommets.

These sizes are approximate as I don't have the item in front of me, but
they are much smaller than the ones on the car.
As you can see these parts are way too small for my value cover. Does
anyone
know what cover is on my car or what are the correct parts? Where can I
get
these parts? The value cover looks correct and I don't think that it is an
after marker unit. Thanks for any advice in identifying the mystery parts.

Thanks for playing,

Bill
