There are several internal components that can be rebuilt of which one
requires a soldering iron.  At least in the UK none of the parts are expensive
and once you have the black plastic cover removed (LUCAS ACR) it is not as
daunting as might be presumed.

It sounds like the rectifier diode pack (?) has packed up on yours but even
when replaced sometimes the alternator is just not much use afterwards and
never really produces the output it ought to.

Are exchange Lucas items really so expensive in the USA?  They can be had for
about £30 over here.
