Update...

I removed and cleaned all the connectors, I pulled the brush holder
and the brushes looked good.  It spins freely.

I was almost sure it was the nasty looking connections on the
alternator.....but it doesn't seem to be.

My V*lvo manual said to hook a test light between negative post on
the battery and its cable to see if there is any current draw with
everything off....no draw so no shorts.

Couldn't get any voltage at the alternator but don't know what may
need to be hooked up to get it running.

Advance auto has them for $65 with a lifetime warranty....sounds
pretty good to me!
