Try checking the voltage coming off the voltage stabalizer.  If the
stabalizer is bad your electric temp gauge will read higher than normal.  I
thought only '79 Midgets had electric temp gauges, so if you replaced a
mechanical combo gauge with the electric one, it might not even be wired to
the voltage stabalizer.  Someone check me on this, but I think the correct
voltage of the stabalizer is only 8 volts.  Been there done that. I put an
electric gauge in my '74, only to have it read right under the red most of
the time.  Once I wired it to the voltage stabalizer, it reads in the middle
most of the time.
