Hi Matt,

The problem is that 175/70 x 13 tyres on 4.5 wire wheel rims will rub on a
square arch car. For instance can you even get the wheels and tyres off
without using a massive pry bar on the wheel arch or letting the air out of
the tyres (don't ask me how I know!!). The solution I adopted was to fit
round arches which I prefer anyway along with wider rims wire wheels.

It won't be the diff housing (axle casing) because the half shafts (axles)
would be the wrong length so would not fit.

 3. Are the spokes loose on the wire wheels?

If wire wheel axles are substituted into a disc wheel rear axle to convert
to wire wheels, the diff. housings are different widths. Can't remember
which is which, but it thought I remembered the disc wheel axle housing is
about 1/2 inch wider than wire wheel axle housing. Just swapping the axles
would widen the rear track and cause the problem you mention.

If the spokes are loose on the wire wheels, when adding a panard rod,
instead of the axle floating slightly from side to side under hard
cornering, the wheels themselves could be flexing (potential disaster when
 they finally give up).

Cheap fixes: die grind off some of the inside of the wheel lips, raise the
rear back up 1", or don't corner so fast.
