This sounds like the polarity of the car has just been changed.  If it
has or has not, still repolarize the regulator.  Do it by taking a wire
and holding one end to the hot side of your battery and BRUSH the other
end across the field terminal of the regulator.  Just brush it a time or
two, no dead shorts, please.
