It is definately tight with the 5 speed. I have pulled my engine 1/2
dozen times but left the 5 speed in the car, much easier this way.
I would advise fitting the engine to the gearbox out of the car, make
sure all lines up and bolts up well, Neversieze all the bolts that go
through the aluminum. I believe if you fit the tranny first you will not
have to dent the heater/battery tray. This must be done only to get them
in as 1 unit.
I also would advise cutting a 4" square hole in the tranny tunnel floor
to get to the trans mount bolts and speedo cable. This will save you a
few hours.
You can aways stick a 5" square sheetmetal patch over the hole. Later
Midgets have this hole from the factory.
Also one the tranny is in, drill and thread (10/32 works well) a spot to
attach the jap clutch line to keep it from flopping around. I attached
mine to the adaptor plate but it was a real pain once the engine and
exhaust was in the way.
The engine bolts are just a bit annoying to install if you do each unit
separate but not impossible. (remember well greased bolts and a 1/4"
drive ratchet) some of the top bolts need to be tightened with an open
end wrench and it's close but not impossible.
It is also wise to install the fan belt while the engine is out, it's
REAL close to the frame rail once installed.
You have a good point about leaving the front pulley off. You will
scratch the frame and steering rack intalling them as one unit.
It is still close with just the engine if the tranny is already in
place.

Good luck and don't scratch the paint!
