The stainless steel used in new car exhausts is of a very low grade. Just
enough of whatever (nickel, I think) to keep the system from rusting out.
One of the main by products of a catalytic converter is water. In
California the emissions system warrantee covers the exhaust components for
8 years or 80,000 miles. The rest of the US the components are covered for
7/70k. To deal with the problem of being more brittle through the heat/cool
cycling, modern cars utilize a greater quantity of flexible exhaust hangers,
thus reducing shock and vibration throughout the systems.
