I bought a '74 Vega on spec back when I was buying clean cars with
mechanical probs, fixing them for resale. It's how I supported my
hobbies. I pulled it apart for a ring & valve job. Almost croaked when
I found out I needed a $300 GM tool to compress all the valve springs at
once in order to remove the cam. My machine shop had the tool so I just
carted the head to them and told them to go thru it.

It still smoked after I put it together so I asked the Vega
specialists at the local Chevy dealership about it. They said to take
it out on the interstate and run it wide open until it quit smoking!
Damned if it didn't work. That's one car I let go purty cheep just to
get rid of it.

   Cheers,

  CR
