Wish I'd known about that back then!

A 1972 Vega Kamback GT was my first new car. The car was $2400 maxed out
new, so $750 was more than a third of the cost of a new one. I lived in
Detroit then too. Other than my '55 Chevy (purchased in 1977), it was the
last American car I ever bought. By the time the Vega had 40k miles on it,
it burned oil like mad and needed to be rebuilt. By 1978 or '79 I'd had it
been repainted, had body rot, and was on it's way to it's second wasted
engine. I took really good car of this car too, but it didn't help. The car
came new with tires that leaked air regularly too. This was a defect in the
tires it originally came on it.
