About 4 years ago, I bought the then-new TIP "Gold" HVLP system (single hose
version) with heated-supply turbine. The first serious project I shot with
it after a couple of gallons of practice-priming and shooting a few scratch
spray tart-ups was my 74-1/2 MGB. I used early Alfa/Scuderia Primarossa
(close to the NSX "fresh-blood" red) in 2 stage epoxy over high hide red
filler primer. While I had the benefit of access to a state of the art spray
booth, the $700 TIP (now a bit over $800) outperformed my previous
restoration shoots using a state of the art Binks compressor supplied gravity
feed HVLP spray gun. The finished product needed no sanding, no buffing,
no run repairs; in short it was concours quality in every respect. The
nicest thing about the HVLP is the lack of overspray.
I painted my Isuzu pickup under a 30 foot parachute in the backyard and
it came out exceptionally nice - a few bug tracks, and a little orange peel,
but no worse than most factory paint jobs...... I bought a couple extra guns
on sale over the years, and set them up for specific paints. And, enough
spare parts to last a hundred paint jobs..... All in all, I've saved at
least $5000 in outsourced paint jobs, and I've rented it out for $50 a
weekend enough times to pay itself back. Great investment, esp if you are
considering shooting a "hand rubbed" lacquer job.
