I have a 1275 from a 1974 Midget that is completely stock (as far as I know)
in my Bugeye. I don't know if this was the original dizzy the engine came
with or not. According to my Haynes the 1275 came with either the Lucas
23D4(no vacuum advance unit) or 25D4 (vacuum advance). Just by looking at
it, I don't see any numbers on it. I would assume (there's that word) that
a vacuum-less dizzy would not have a vacuum unit at all, but I don't know.
My distributor has the "tin man's hat" (vacuum capsule) on it, but has a
rubber cover over the nipple that should/would connect to the carburettor.
Does this mean that it should be a vacuum advance dizzy but is not
benefitting from a vacuum supplied by the carburettor? How would this
affect performance and/or economy (most probably negatively, but how? i.e.
less economy on accelerating, but okay at idle, etc). Should I get the line
to connect to the carbs, or should I just pull the guts and put in
electronic ignition? What's the consensus (like the list could come to one)
on what the best electronic set-up is? Does it require a different coil?
Should I also go ahead and switch over to an alternator?
