And the problem would be on the 30W side, not on the
5W side.

Per several direct emails asking what PAO is
(previously sent to an enquiring mind) :

PAO - Polyalphaolefin. Common replacement for
lubricants and coolants, safer than the conventionals
it replaces, and cheaper in the case of coolant
applications (synthetic shouldn't really cost that
much more than petro-based). PAO has great heat
transfer at high temp, and, down to -40F (or C, it's
the same temp at that point!) its viscosity is better
than naturals, so it flows into nooks and crannies
like a light weight. That's why you rarely see a
synthetic rated much above 5 or 10W at the lower end
of the scale - it flows like a 5W even though the
upper end viscosity and heat withstanding potential is
"naturally" as good as a thick conventional. It
"cokes", i.e. leaves bearing-destroying carbon
deposits at a much higher temperature than
conventionals.

The above was brought to you by your tax dollars - see
1997 report prepared for the USAF: "Coolanol-25R
Silicone Based Ester Coolant Replacement With A
Polyalphaolefin Working Fluid" by yours truly.
