Chris,

I had the exact same problem with the one I did in the '75 I had. Mine
turned out to be a bad ground. If the wire winding or the contact isn't
broken, it should work OK. Check it with an ohmmeter. You should get
variable impedance when you move the float. That will give you and idea if
it is still functioning.
