Hi Mike,

Sounds like you had a less than fun outing. Too Bad, sorry to hear that. Seems
to me that you have a number of minor problems that are compounding.

Excess oil coming out of the rocker bush/shaft should be able to be controlled
by
the intake valve seals. The rocker bushes are replaceable, available from Peter
C, part number 2A21 (each) or from APT, part number B3801 (a set). They aren't
drilled for oil delivery so you have to do that first, then press out the old
with the new and make sure you have the orientation correct. Then take them
with
the rocker shaft, standard or hardened to your machine shop and have them honed
to fit.

Now for the valve stem seals. Using the bronze ones you normally have to set
them up looser as the grow more than iron ones and seize the valve stem when
hot. Get the top hat seals and machine a groove near the end of the guides so
the top hat stays put. Then also use the O-ring seal on the stem tops under the
keepers. On a 1275, the guides are machined to accept a teflon seal from APT.
Not available for
the 948/1098.

So with the possibility of loose guides, non contact stem seals and excess oil
flow from the rockers, you certainly would be smoking under back down or
braking. This turn the engine into a vacuum pump and SUCKS the oil down the
stems.

As for a 948 not making it on the grades, I used a 948 in My Morris for years
after I bought it. Up over Grapevine, over all the Oregon passes and never a
problem. I have a customer with a fresh 948 in his Morris with a 3.9:1 rear end
and keeps up with freeway traffic just fine. Says it doesn't go below 58 on all
the freeway hills in the Seattle area. The 948 certainly isn't a 1275, but in
good trim it's still an eager runner.

Hope this helps some.

Regards, Paul A
