Wasn't it the other way around? The 61-66 or so fenders had less space
between the headlamp and turn indicator - the turn indicator sat higher, and
closer to the headlamp, to clear the wider bladed bumpers used on the
earlier cars. The indicator was lowered in the fenders around, but not
exactly at, the time of the change to the thinner bumpers.
My kneecaps are hoping Frank doesn't take offense at my questioning him ;-)
