I have the same frustration, which is compounded for me by "the last mile", or
in my case, the last four miles. There's a NJ Transit train that starts in High
Bridge (about 4 miles from my house), and runs through Westfield (about 4-5
miles from my workplace) on its way to Newark. The train from High Bridge
doesn't run when my schedule needs it to, but even if it did, there's not an
easy way to get from Westfield Station, across US 22 (4 lane divided highway
full of New Jersey drivers in SUVs), and to the office. I could cycle, but NJ
Transit only allows one to bring a bicycle during non-rush hour. Big Help!

With the rise in gas prices again, I'm glad we have the daily drivers we do. My
Saturn wagon gets on average 34 mpg, and still can do 0-60 in 8-9 seconds when
it needs to, which is enough to merge onto the aforementioned rt. 22 during
rush hour. My wife's 91 Tercel has 140K on it and still gets close to 38 mpg.
We'll be looking to replace the Tercel within the next few years, and we're
just now looking at what's out there - we'd like something relatively quick and
sporty, with good handling, but also fuel efficient and running on regular gas.
Ideally, a modern rendition of the MGBGT would be what we're looking for. In a
world of tall econoboxes and SUV corssover things, it's tough to find something
that fits all the requirements. Ah, well... rant over! :-)
