Listers,

Point me in a direction of things to look at please. Situation is this:
I recently had my 1500 rebuilt due to blowing a head gasket. The head was
warped and they did shave the head. When I reinstalled the engine, I also
removed the heater - just incase this has an effect. The car has a weber
downdraft and monza header.

Before the rebuild the car ran very well, always cool (160 - 170), idled
smooth, not great but good mileage (25-28), timing was set according to
weber at 22 BTDC with vacuum unit disconnected, rpm solid at 950 rpm.

After the rebuild/reinstallation. The engine runs rough. It seems to lope.
I have tried to adjust the carb and timing to smooth out the lope, to no
avail. I am now back to the original weber installation setup that came with
the carb (timing 10 BTDC, Idle speed screw one turn from contact, and idle
mixture 1/16 back from rpm reduction point.) idle speed is lopey at 950.

The engine also heats up. I know that some heat up is expected until the
engine is worn in, but this seems to be excessive. I have about 250 miles
on it since installation. Even just sitting at idle it will heat up. I have
been careful and shutting it down before 200F. Fluid level is fine, fan
clutch replaced (was not the problem). I do have an oil cooler installed.
Radiator was cleaned/flushed. Again I point to the removal of the heater
while the engine was out, (but I never used the heater before). If the air
is cool and I am driving in the evening for example and the engine
temperature starts to creep up, and I drive through a noticalbe change in
Ambient temperature, I can watch the engine decrease. It will cool right
down to the thermostat setting (160). then start to heat back up.

The engine does not seem to lack any power. There is a very noticable
decrease in mileage (like 18 - 20).

There are just to da** many conflicting indicators. The lope at idle,
increased engine temp, poor mileage (I know I can smell gas - its not
leaking - that is how rich it smells,

Any pointers, directions to look, tests to conduct, etc. would be greatly
appreciated.

TIA
Brent
