Larry-

Chris is absolutely correct in that either
way will result in hotter running though
not necessarily "ragged running" which
is more symptomatic of an intermittent
electrical problem.

Retarded = "slow" in performance...like
the engine needs Geritol or something.
Sometimes accompanyed by black smoke
out the exhaust and the smell of unburnt
fuel (carbs haven't been changed from
when timing was "right").

Advanced = "quick", like the engine has
suddenly been given Viagra. Sometimes
accompanyed by an "off idle" bog on
acceleration and "scads" of low end torque that "came out of nowhere"!

And, yes, "pinging" most especially as the
engine just begins to come up on the cam
i terms of torque with a tendency to "run on" when shut down after a
run.

Did you physically move the distributor
for any reason during your work. Usually,
it is tight enough not to get accidentally
moved (at least, it should be!).
