The way some of these e-mail viruses work is to use the entries in your
address book to forward themselves to other computers without your knowledge.
Norton and other s/ware are effective if you keep your virus profiles updated.
A technique that seems to work (so far) in blocking new viruses for which you
have no profile is to create a dummy entry as the first entry in your address
book with any name preceded by a '$' and the address preceded by a '<' -
like $dalep <bogus. Up until now the viruses haven't recognized the entry
as that of an address book and stops searching so the other entries remain
hidden.

What they will continue to do is search for url's in your internet cache and
visit them. If there are any e-mail addresses there the virus will forward
itself to them with your return address. I have had this happen (long ago)and
received warnings from people that I do not know telling me that I was
spreading a virus. I even heard from some high school classmates that I had no
contact with since the flood. The link there was I had visited my high school
reunion pages and they had 'registered' themselves. Not one entry in my
address book received an infected e-mail from me and I believe it was because
of the bogus entry.

You may not realize it. The email sent to me carried a very nasty virus
called "bar.scr". Please go out and buy an anti-virus program and use it! I
did and avoided damage to my computer. Others in your address book might
not
  be as prepared.
