While I agree with others that your problem is most likely electrical in
consideration of the symptoms as you
describe, there does seem to be another
problem in addition to the foregoing 
considering you can shut the engine
down simply by placing your hand over
the exhaust (assuming this requires no
particular "strength" on your part).

Maybe time for a "mechanical" check of
compression along with a leak-down
check when you can get around to it?
