Hard to say from your description, but my guess would be the front pads need
replacing and rotors turned or replaced. That's assuming you have drum brakes
(with shoes) in the rear.
Many disc brake pads on modern cars have a wear indicator. It is just a piece
of metal on the pad that acts like a fingernail on a chalkboard. When the pad
wears to a certain point the metal contacts the rotor and makes a screeching
noise.
Now, your car may have four wheel disc brakes, which means you can't really
tell which are worn until you look at them all. In any case, have all your
brakes checked when you replace whichever are currently causing the noise.

When your brakes start making noise like a
not metal on metal but just that loud noise
it starts making when they need work done on
them,,,It is everytime I apply the brakes that
it makes this noise, but coming home from Houston
yesterday I noticed when I stopped to pay my
tolls on the beltway the noise it made. It hasnt
been this way I dont think for long,,but I always
have my windows up and noise from a radio,,so I
dont know exactly how long it has been making
noise,,I wouldnt think long because it didnt
do that Tuesday when I was coming back from Houston
when I stopped to pay my tolls...
So the question I am asking is this:
How do I know if I need "brake shoes" or "brake
pads?" I am thinking it is the pads and if it
is like let go and metal on metal it is the
shoes I need...Anyway,,I thank you you in
advance for the help...
