Recently, I've been providing periodic chauffeuring services for a good
friend who, in politically correct speak, is visually impaired (though he
much prefers the word, blind.)
He's a great guy - and his labrador/golden retriever-cross guide dog is even
nicer.
This afternoon, the three of us were enjoying the cloistered comforts of
what can best be described as "the past in perpetuity" in something called
an LDV Convoy. This is a long wheelbase, high roofed latter-day equivalent
of a light commercial that was first perpetrated by British Leyland. It was
c**p then - and after twenty + years of continuous production, it's now 21st
century state-of-the-art c**p - without a cup-holder to be seen.
We had endured an hour long trip in too close proximity to a cacophonous
turbo-diesel and were about 800 yards from base. Dog was snoozing on the
seat between us - but suddenly woke and broke into frenzied whining and
barking. Refusing to respond to commands from both sides of the noisy cab to
"shut up" - I then thought I detected a disconcerting aroma.
It was that not unfamiliar aroma of heavy duty cable insulation getting
hot - like VERY hot.
The dog was by now standing on the seat and very anxious for me to stop so
he could "look after" his owner. Glancing round the cab, I soon noticed
substantial volumes of very acrid, black smoke pouring from under the
passenger parcel shelf at footwell level. Skidded to a halt, killed the
engine, leapt out to get round to let passenger out and watched marvelling
as the dog bunted him out with his nose before joining us on the pavement.
(Unfortunately) the 'insulation melt' stopped with the engine being switched
off - though I'd have happily stood by and watched the damned thing burn to
the ground.
But obvious praise must go to the dog for alerting us in the first place and
for ensuring his 'master' got out to safety before he did.
And this is the smiley bit. The dog's name?
"Lucas"
