Bill-

Not the easiest device to use but, it works
for setting up the mixture for idle in non-
variable venturi carbs such as the Weber and as a guide to it's proper
mixture for off-idle "progression" as well, with the understanding that
you'll probably have
to go a tad more rich in this respect than
the leanest setting that will offer a smooth
transition between idle and main system
when setting up in the garage, rather than
under "load" as in actually driving the car.

For the SU type variable venturi carb.
it is no better than the tried and true
method as outlined in the manuals,
especially when a portable type tachometer is hooked up so you can
"see" (as well as hear) that "momentary"
increase in rpm when the air valve is lifted
from the jetbridge that 1/8th inch or so.

And for lifting the air valve, I've found
a small flatbladed screwdriver and a
direct view at jetbridge level (bend down
and take a look!) to be more accurate
than using the carb's "lifting pin" in getting
just that tiny 1/8th inch that is required in
this respect.

As for "balancing", nothing really beats a
an instrument designed for this purpose
in measuring airlow "visually", such as the Unisyn.

These are well worth the investment as
they literally take all the guesswork out of
balancing, with the understanding that
balance should be re-checked after the
linkage between carbs. is tightened up...
things "move" minutely sometimes, in ways not apparent to the naked eye!
