Same principle as the draft (or is that more correctly "draught"?:) tube
employed
on 948cc Series A engines wherein such a
tube was actually part of the forward
valve lifter gallery engine side cover.
Though these tubes breathe both ways,
don't see much chance of foreign matter
invading the crankcase considering vertical placement and length of tube
or hose, unless it had legs.
