Thanks Mike.  How about just roughing it up with a wire brush wheel on a
drill and then using the compound?

        It is called "Retaining Compound", they make it in at least two
strengths.
        Go for the stronger stuff.

        BTW, you can get a machine shop to crosshatch the bearing seat on
the
        inside of the hub to help the sloppy fit and to get the retaining
        compound to work a little better.
