Jim,

Before you pull the head, superglue a small bit of mirror onto a bendable
bit of wire and peek into the sparkplug holes with a deft touch and a
flashlight.  Then remove the manifolds and stare into the ports and check
for the smooth raising and lowering of the valves turning the engine over by
hand.  I doubt the disc could be hiding somewhere that you wouldn't see it
this way.  When the manifold is off, a light shown through the port with an
open valve will illuminate the interior of a cylinder for a plug hole
inspection.  You can easily see most of the piston tops and look for nasty
marks, gouges and so forth.
