As sad as it is, as a college teacher, I must agree
with you. That being said I must say that in spite of
the lower intelligence and preparation rates of
potential students they are still, mostly, the higher
end of the scale. I teach at a 2 year school and my
wife works at the 4 year university in the town where
we live. There are still some pretty bright kids and
faculty/staff folks that are associated with
institutions of higher learning. Admittedly there are
more than a few in college, 2 and 4 year schools, that
should not be in college. Some were unqualified to
leave high school. In a small town, San Angelo or
Canyon, Texas, it is one of the indicators that there
may(key word may) be some intelligent life around.
Otherwise it's cowboys, awl(oil)workers and
farmers/ranchers. Many of whom are nice, not
sophicated, but good folks. I bought my Sprite from
the Director of Student Activities at Eastern New
Mexico U, at Portales and he bought it from a mechanic
in Clovis, NM. (both college towns) Spridget activity,
for me, is a barometer of intelligent life in the
area. More Spridgets exist in college towns, around
here; ergo Spridget people are smarter people? :-)So
much for my elitist professor BS. BTW my wife did not
go to college and she is one of the smartest people I
know. I would feel a whole lot better about the whole
thing if I hadn't had to correct a lot of words with
spell check :-)
Your mileage may vary.

cheers, bill b.
