I saw a great documentary on VW on the History Channel some years ago. They
mentioned that Ford thought about buying the company (VW) but decided against
it because of the anti-German sentiment after WWII and, more importantly,
because Americans liked BIG cars and he didn't think the VW would sell well
enough to be profitable.

If I'd hazard a guess, I'd say he turned the factory down because it
likely would have cost him a great deal in public opinion, and
consequently sales, after the war.
I'm curious to know what the book offered a a reason.
