Another thing about the reproduction gear boxes.  The gears are made of a really
inferior material.  Particularly the larger toothed gear.  After only a few
months, the M*** repro I was running for everyday use stripped the teeth from
this larger gear.  Luckily, my friend that has been restoring Healeys for over
30 years had a large mayo jar filled with used Smith's gear boxes and parts.  He
just happened to have a single half in all that jar that was the half I needed!
I just removed the large toothed gear and installed it in my repro.  I have been
running it for a year now with no problems.
One other things you have to be careful of is the gearbox fitting that screws on
the generator.  It comes loose frequently.  Can really screw things up if it
comes off.  Whenever you check your oil levels (engine, carbs, etc) just take a
quick look at the fittings on the gear box.
