Spray it down with spray white lithium grease, but NOT the kind that 
uses water as a propellent. It's out there and the grease stays on top 
of the water and the metal rusts. BTDT and then read the can.
Stick it in an old canvas bag or something strong like that. Do NOT 
cover it in plastic as it will condensate inside the bag and rust.
Of course submersed in oil in a spackle bucket would work too but when
you move the bucket and stick it over that nail sticking up, you're 
gonna have a mess. Or if you should "kick the bucket"......
