I hear ya. The first time I drove on the then newly opened Route 1
freeway on Delaware (about 1997 or so), I was astonished to find the
road marked in kilometers. The exits were numbered according to the
kilometer posts as well. But the strangest thing is seeing "Exit 155,
1/2 mile" on that highway! Everywhere else I've driven in the US is
marked in miles (so it works with the odometers), with kilometers, if
given, in smaller type or parentheses.

Actually I think the Romans had something to do with it. 1000 paces to a
Roman Mile. At least the Milecastles on Hadrians Wall, just near here,
are
about 1000 (good) paces appart
Sadly, in the UK, we now have a really bastardised system where things
are
measured in a mixture of metric and imperial. If I buy sheet building
materials, I might get an 8 foot X 4 foot sheet of 12 millimeter
plywood!
Now what sort of sense is that!!
