Oooh, I think he is fighting dirty!!! Anybody check his passport lately?

The most I have gotten out of a car was 235,000 on my 1987 Duster 2.2 -- oh
yes, that's a Mitsubishi engine, isn't it? When the original clutch finally
started to go, and it was time to replace the original shocks and struts and
time for the third set of tires and the third exhaust on a rusty 8-year old
car, I retired it. If I had taken good care of that car, I might still have
it... The only time it ever saw a professional mechanic was when the
"points" went out under warranty. The rest of it I fixed myself; the clutch
cable, the 3-4 shifter fork, the timing belt, brakes, and a few other minor
details. That car did not owe me a thing.

The lousy 1995 Escort wagon's clutch only went 180,000 miles, but my
daughter is driving it on a new clutch now, we will see how many miles that
thing ends up with. Smaller engine than the Duster, but never had the fuel
mileage the Duster did and didn't have any low-end torque, either.

The GTi has been a fun car, but I doubt I would do it again. Still I have to
wonder how long its clutch will last...
