David:  I'd check the timing first, only because it's the easiest thing to
check.  But then I'd suspect a rich mixture if it's afterfiring (out the
exhaust) or a lean mixture if it's "backfiring" (out the carbs).  Do you
have a colortune?  I love the colortune, though some seem not to.
